10 Best Dehumidifiers

Ten dehumidifiers ranked by Amazon star rating and review volume, each with the three things buyers most often praise. We counted the complaints too — most of these do not last as long as buyers expect.

How we make money. We earn a commission when you buy through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Those commissions come from affiliate programmes run by the brands and by third-party networks, not from you.

How that affects this list. Products from brands we have a commercial relationship with are listed first. Products we earn little or nothing from can still appear, lower down, when they belong in the comparison.

How the order is set. The top three slots are named picks — best overall, most popular, best value — and each states the measurement it won on. Every product after them is ordered by one fixed formula: the Amazon star rating and review count, applied identically. No brand can pay for a slot, a badge or a score.

We do not test products in a lab. Read the full method on How We Rank.

How to choose a dehumidifier

The compressor is what fails, and it fails sooner than people expect

This is the single clearest signal in our counts. Across 845 mentions of durability on this page only 25% were positive — hOmeLabs at 23% over 743 mentions, Gasbye at 34% over 102. That is not one bad batch; it is the category.

A dehumidifier is a refrigeration machine that runs for most of the year in exactly the conditions that corrode things. When it dies it is almost always the compressor or the sealed refrigerant system, which is not economically repairable. Read the warranty as the real specification: a longer compressor warranty is worth more than ten extra pints of rated capacity.

Use the drain hose, or you will resent the tank

Water accumulation drew 596 mentions on this page and only 54% were positive, and nearly all of that is about emptying. A 50 pint machine working properly in a damp basement fills its bucket in half a day, and when the bucket is full the machine stops — usually overnight, so you find it off in the morning.

Every unit here has a continuous drain outlet. If there is a floor drain, a sump or a sink within hose reach, connect it on day one and the problem disappears entirely. If there is not, a model with a built-in pump can push water upward to a window or a sink, which is the only other way out of the tank.

Pint ratings are measured somewhere warmer than your basement

The pint figure is a laboratory number taken at conditions warmer and more humid than most rooms. In a cool basement the same machine pulls noticeably less water, because a compressor dehumidifier works by condensing moisture on a cold coil and there is less to condense when the air is already cold.

That is also why compressor units struggle below about 41°F and can frost up. If the space is genuinely cold rather than merely damp, look for a model that advertises low-temperature operation with an auto-defrost cycle, and treat the headline pint rating as a comparison figure between models rather than a promise.

Coverage claims assume a sealed room

A 4,500 sq ft rating assumes a closed space with no fresh moisture coming in. A basement with a leaking wall, an unvented bathroom, or a crawlspace open to outside air is not that space, and no dehumidifier will win against a running source of water.

If damp keeps returning after the machine has been running for days, the machine is not the problem. Fix the source — the grading, the gutter, the missing vent fan — and then size the dehumidifier for what is left.

Noise matters more than the ratings suggest

These units run for hours at a time, and most of them live in a space people also use. Compressor noise is constant and low, which is easier to live with than a fan that cycles, but it is not quiet.

Noise was one of the few themes where opinion stayed mostly positive in our counts, but that is because most of these machines live in basements. If yours will run in a bedroom or a home office, weight it much more heavily than the reviews would suggest.

What goes wrong with these

Most of these do not last as long as buyers expect

25% positive

WinnerReviews counted 845 mentions of durability across the dehumidifiers on this page and only 25% were positive — hOmeLabs at 23% across 743 mentions, Gasbye at 34% across 102. A dehumidifier is a refrigeration unit running most of the year in a damp room, and the compressor is what gives out. Check the warranty length before the pint rating.

You will empty the tank far more often than you think

54% positive

The tank is the part people underestimate. WinnerReviews found 596 mentions of water accumulation and only 54% were positive. A 50 pint unit in a genuinely damp basement can fill its bucket twice a day, and when it is full the machine stops. If the unit can reach a drain, use the hose outlet and never touch the tank again.

322 of 596 mentions

These are bigger than the photos suggest

41% positive

Compact size drew 58 mentions and just 41% were positive. A 50 pint compressor unit is roughly the footprint of a small suitcase and needs clear air on all sides to work, so it cannot be tucked into a corner or a cupboard. Measure the space before ordering, including the clearance.

Frequently asked

What size dehumidifier do I need?
Match the pint rating to the size of the space and how wet it is, then treat the number as optimistic. Manufacturer figures are measured in warmer, more humid conditions than a typical basement, so a unit rated for your square footage in the lab will work harder than expected in the room. When in doubt, size up rather than down.
How long should a dehumidifier last?
Less time than most buyers expect. Across the units on this page only 25% of the 845 durability mentions were positive. The failure is almost always the sealed refrigeration system, which is not economically repairable, so the compressor warranty is the specification that actually matters.
Do dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity?
They are among the more power-hungry appliances in a house because the compressor runs for long stretches. An Energy Star model uses meaningfully less for the same water removal. Running one only when humidity is above your target, rather than continuously, makes more difference than the model choice.
Can I leave a dehumidifier running all the time?
Yes, and with a drain hose connected that is the usual arrangement. Without a hose the tank fills and the machine stops — 596 mentions of water accumulation on this page ran only 54% positive, and emptying is most of that. Set a humidity target of around 50% and let it cycle rather than running flat out.
Where should I put a dehumidifier?
Somewhere central with clear air on all sides, not against a wall or in a cupboard. These are larger than the product photos suggest — only 41% of the 58 size mentions on this page were positive — so measure the space including clearance before ordering.
Do dehumidifiers work in cold basements?
Compressor models lose efficiency as the air gets colder and can frost up below roughly 41°F. For a genuinely cold space, look for low-temperature operation with auto-defrost, or a desiccant model, which works differently and does not have the same cold-weather limit.
Why is my dehumidifier not collecting water?
Usually one of three things: the room is already at the humidity target, the air is too cold for the coil to condense moisture, or a filter or coil is blocked. If it has been running for days in a room that still feels damp, look for a source of fresh moisture rather than a fault in the machine.
Is a dehumidifier with a pump worth it?
It is if there is no drain below the machine. A gravity hose only works downhill; a built-in pump can push water up to a sink or out of a window. If you have a floor drain or a sump within hose reach, the plain drain outlet does the same job for less money.
